What does 225/55 R17 mean?
It's three tire measurements packed into one code: width, aspect ratio, and wheel diameter. On 225/55 R17, the tire is 225 millimeters wide, the sidewall is 55% as tall as the tire is wide, the R means radial construction, and the 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. You'll find that code on the sticker inside the driver's door and stamped into the sidewall of the tire already on your car. - 225 — the tire's width in millimeters, sidewall to sidewall.
- 55 — the aspect ratio: the sidewall is 55% as tall as the tire is wide. Lower number, shorter sidewall.

- 17 — the wheel diameter in inches. That one has to match exactly.
- Where to find it — on the driver's-door sticker, or on the sidewall of the tire already on your car.

It comes down to your budget and how much longer you're keeping the car. A new tire has full tread and lasts longer; a used tire costs less and gets you rolling today. Can you repair my flat instead of selling me a tire?
Yes, we repair flats — it's one of the jobs we do most. We find the leak first and look at where the damage is: a nail in the tread can usually be fixed, but a cut in the sidewall, or a tire that was driven on flat and cooked itself from the inside, is not safe to repair. Do I have to replace all four tires?
Not always. If only one tire is damaged you can replace that one, though it's better to keep it matched with the tire on the same axle in size and similar tread. If your vehicle is all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, the owner's manual usually asks for all four to be close in wear. And if two of them still have good life left, we say so and you buy two.
